Eco-Friendly “Termite-Inspired” Data Center Design Receives Patent Registration
Syntekabio (KOSDAQ: 226330), an AI-powered drug discovery company, announced on September 2 that it has officially registered a patent for its innovative “air circulation system and method using natural convection” applied to its proprietary AI Bio Supercomputing Center (ABSC) data center.
The patented technology utilizes natural convection principles to circulate and cool air without the need for traditional HVAC systems. Inspired by the structure of termite mounds, the data center was designed to maintain stable server operations without large-scale power consumption for cooling.
While conventional data centers consume a significant portion of their energy on air conditioning systems, the ABSC center enables stable thermal control solely through natural airflow. Warm air generated by the servers is naturally expelled using the fan airflow already produced by the servers themselves—creating a self-sustaining ventilation loop.
During most of the year, cooling is achieved exclusively through natural convection, with mechanical systems operating only during the hot and humid summer months. This approach dramatically reduces unnecessary power usage and maximizes energy efficiency. As a result, Syntekabio has not only minimized carbon emissions but also achieved a PUE (Power Usage Effectiveness) of 1.13, positioning the center as a next-generation, eco-friendly alternative to conventional data infrastructure.
Earlier this year, the data center was awarded the highest-level Platinum grade in Green Data Center certification, and this newly registered patent is a formal recognition of the technology’s originality and innovation.
Since launching its data center colocation services earlier this year, Syntekabio has already signed contracts with two clients and is in discussions with multiple additional partners. The company expects to finalize further agreements by the end of the year to expand its services.
If all planned contracts are secured, the company anticipates at least KRW 2 billion (approx. USD 1.5 million) in annual recurring revenue starting next year, with the potential to reach KRW 3 billion (approx. USD 2.2 million) annually if the center operates at full leasing capacity. This marks a significant step toward establishing a stable, recurring revenue model and strengthening the company’s overall revenue structure.
A Syntekabio representative stated: “Data centers are critical infrastructure for the AI industry, yet they consume vast amounts of energy. Syntekabio found inspiration in nature to propose a new standard for eco-friendly, HVAC-free data centers. This patent not only validates our technological differentiation, but also serves as a key milestone in our sustainability journey. We aim to continue generating stable recurring revenue based on green technology while growing our data center business as a core AI infrastructure leader.”
